Apple is reportedly preparing to unveil the iPhone 17 series in September, sticking to its annual fall launch cycle. The lineup is expected to include four models: iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, and a brand-new variant likely to be named the iPhone 17 Air.
Analyst reports and industry leaks suggest that the iPhone 17 Air will feature a major design departure from previous models. With a significantly slimmer body and fresh camera layout, it may emerge as the thinnest iPhone yet, trimming nearly 2mm off the iPhone 16 Pro's profile. This model is also rumored to replace the existing Plus version.
While the standard iPhone 17 will likely retain the design cues and hardware fundamentals of the iPhone 16—such as the USB-C port and Action Button—the Pro versions may see an aesthetic refresh. A redesigned rectangular camera housing and smoother frame are among the expected design upgrades.
On the imaging front, Apple is said to be doubling the front-facing camera resolution. A new 24MP selfie camera with a six-element lens is expected to replace the 12MP setup found in the previous three generations. The main rear camera on the base iPhone 17 is likely to feature a 48MP primary sensor, while enhanced telephoto zoom capabilities could remain limited to the Pro lineup.
The iPhone 17 Pro Max may set a new benchmark for iPhone photography. Leaks indicate it could sport three 48MP sensors for wide, ultra-wide, and telephoto shooting. This configuration may allow the device to support 8K video recording—an iPhone first.
In terms of pricing, Apple is expected to maintain its current pricing structure despite the added hardware improvements. The base iPhone 17 could launch at an estimated price of Rs 79,900 in India, though official pricing remains unconfirmed. Price hikes cannot be ruled out, especially for the Pro and Air variants.
Additionally, sources indicate Apple might change its release strategy starting with the iPhone 18 series in 2026. Future rollouts could be split, with base models launching earlier in the year and Pro models following in the latter half.
